Some Frequently Asked Questions about the WEST-E…

What is the WEST-E?

The WEST-E: Special Education (070) exam is a part of teaching licensure in Washington State. WEST-E scores are used to complete a state application for teacher certification. The assessment ensures that the examinee has the skills and knowledge necessary to become a special education teacher in Washington State public schools.

What is on the WEST-E?

The WEST-E (070) is a multiple-choice test designed to assess whether you possess the knowledge and skills necessary to become a special education teacher in Washington State. The test consists of approximately 110 multiple-choice questions taken within a two-hour-and-fifteen-minute time frame. Areas of study include:

  • Understanding Students with Disabilities: 25% of test

  • Assessment and Program Development: 25% of test

  • Promoting Development and Learning: 25% of test

  • Foundations and Professional Practice: 25% of test

TOTAL: 110 questions; 2 hours and 15 minutes

How is the WEST-E scored?

On the WEST-E, the number of questions you answer correctly is used to create your raw score for that test. Scores are scaled to a number in the range of 100 – 300, a passing score being 240. The score shows your performance on the test as a whole and is scaled to allow comparison across various versions of the test. Your score report will also indicate a performance index giving you a general idea of how you performed on each subarea.

There is no penalty for guessing on the WEST-E, so be sure to eliminate answer choices and answer every question. If you still don’t know the answer, guess; you may get it right! Keep in mind that some multiple-choice questions are experimental questions for the purpose of the WEST-E test makers and will not count toward your overall score. However, since those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question.
